由butterfly学学英语构词法之一：复合法

利用复合法构成的单词，是由两个各自本身有意思的词，组合在一起，拥有一个新的意思。例如：classmate(同班同学)= class(班级) +  mate(同伴)类似的单词还有许多,根据这个方法可以让自学单词：

   同事 workmate    校友 schoolmate    同桌 deskmate

复合词在英语中占有很大的比例，能否正确地对待他们会影响词汇学习的效果，教师要抓住机会，提高其使用价值。例一：分解复合词：watermelon（西瓜）中的water(水、浇水)和melon（西瓜），strawberry（草莓）  中的straw（稻草、麦杆）和berry浆果，birthday中的birth（出生）和day日子， playground中的play（玩）和ground（地面）， pineapple， keyboard，blackboard， raincoat等等。例二：组成复合词：由policeman组成 postman / policewoman，由classmate 组成workmate schoolmate / deskmate，由anything组成something / nothing，由bedroom组成meeting room / sitting room / reading room，由 home和work组成homework（家作），由house和 work组成housework(家务)等等。复合词进行拆分可以得到更多的词汇，而且都是非常相近，便于记忆，学生的词汇量大大增加。

　　我上次摘录了《色戒》小说英文版的几句经典译文，其中“生是你的人，死是你的鬼”这句， “Alive, my body belonged to you; dead, I am your ghost.” Lovell 女士译得简洁传神，令人印象深刻。

　　千百年来，这句中国女子的经典告白，凄美而决绝。我想，用中国韵味的英文来翻译，可以把“ghost”, 改成“butterfly”。“生是你的人；死是你的蝴蝶。”也许老外看了，仅知文字优美，却体味不到氤氲其间的悲凉。懂英文的中国人，却心有戚戚。罗愁绮恨，痴嗔贪怨，一览无遗。

The English are considered the first modern society to develop swimming as a sport. By 1837, regular swimming competitions were being held in London's six artificial pools, organized by the National Swimming Society in England. As the sport grew in popularity many more pools were built, and when a new governing body, the Amateur Swimming Association of Great Britain, was organized in 1880, it numbered more than 300 member clubs.

One used an obstacle course; another was a test of underwater swimming endurance; the third was a 4,000-metre event, the longest competitive swimming event ever. None of the three was ever used in the Olympics again.　　For a variety of reasons, women were excluded from swimming in the first several Olympic Games. In 1896 and again in 1906, women could not participate because the developer of the modern games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, held firmly to the assumption, common in the Victorian era, that women were too frail to engage in competitive sports. It was only at the 1912 Games when women's swimming made its debut at the prompting of the group that later became known as the International Olympic Committee.   
　　From the humble beginning with four swimming events, the Olympics have developed to 32 swimming races, 16 for men and 16 for women. The Special Olympics, competitive swimming for people with disabilities, has 22 events for men and 22 for women.

为什么银河是milky way呢？和milk有什么关系？和galaxy 有什么区别？

这个可和希腊神话有点关系了。
其实银河还有一个比较正式的说法，就是galaxy。galaxy是1350年造的字，取自希腊文，意思是奶汁圈出来的环（circle of milk），大家可查一字根galacto- 就会明白。之所以有此名，是因为古希腊人观察天空，依其形状得出的。

后来希腊神话也因此创造出一个神话故事：话说人人熟悉的大力士（Hercules，或作Heracles）是天皇宙斯（Zeus）与凡间女王（Alcmene）所生之子，结果被爱吃醋的天后赫拉（Hera）得知，于是想尽办法要弄死孩子。在其出生不久，赫拉就派遣两条毒蛇要咬死婴儿，没想到Hercules力大无穷，反被他掐死。赫拉只好亲自出马把小孩从凡间抢到天上来，结果抱在怀中时，小孩因饿急而吸吮起赫拉的乳汁来，赫拉大怒急急将小孩抛下界，结果乳汁也因此洒在天空，这就是银河，也就是俗称的Milky Way。

Cowherd and the Weaving Girl
The story of Chinese Valentine's Day
In a Chinese legend, the Sun God had seven beautiful daughters.
All his fairy daughters could weave beautiful clothes.
One day, the seven fairies came down from heaven and were playing in a river.
A cowherd walked by the river.
He saw that the fairies had left their beautiful clothes on the shore, so he took one of them.
His plan was to stop one of the fairies from flying back to their heaven palace.
He reasoned that the fairies needed to wear their beautiful clothes if they wanted to fly.
When it was time to go home, the youngest fairy could not find her clothes.
The other fairies put on their clothes and flew away.
The youngest fairy was very sad and she started to cry.
The cowherd saw this and offered to take her to his house.
Because the cowherd took care of the fairy so well,she fell in love with him and married him.
The Sun God also blessed their marriage.
After they were married, the fairy thougjt she did not need to weave again.
The Sun God got so angry that he took his youngest daughter away from her husband.
He never wanted to see the cowherd again.
From then on, the fairy weaver stayed in heaven, and the cowherd stayed on earth.
They could only see each other once a year on July 7th on the lunar calendar.
The birds felt so sad for this young couple that they made a bridge for the two to walk on.
This bridge is known as the "Milky Way"
Only once a year, the couple could meet on the Milky Way.
And they still love each other deeply.
Now it is a tradition to celebrate Chinese Valentine's Day once a year on July 7th of the lunar calender. .

长知识:
The Milky Way is a massive spiral galaxy over 7000 light years in diameter, made up of the more than 200 billion stars and interstellar gases in our galaxy and many different interstellar materials. Older stars are located near the galactic halo, where there are fewest stars. Our solar system is located in the Orion Arm, one of several spiral arms that contain innumerable stars. It is about halfway out from the center of the galaxy. When we look towards the galactic center from this position, our line of sight is completely obscured by dust clouds.

Every time they saw each other they would whisper planet secrets, or share wisps1 of atmosphere, or tell silly jokes.

So the planets kept on dancing to the math music of the universe, and Lan's moon was admired by all, until one day an evil minded ice hearted comet viciously slammed into it, shattering it into a thousand thousand pieces. At that time, Yee was all the way on the other side of the sun and couldn't hear the wails and shouts that rocked Lan through and through. All the nearby planets, who were jealous anyway, made fun of Lan. Lan was so ashamed of what had happended to the moon, so generously given by Yee, that Lan began to dread their next meeting.

But the old equations had their say, and after so long they were together again. Lan was almost afraid to look at Yee, but Yee reached out a wisp of atmosphere in comfort.Yee hesitated a minute, because all planets know how beautiful moons are, but then went ahead and smashed the two remaining moons together so that Lan would have no reason to feel bad.

But then, something beautiful happened their shimmering bits of moon dust started to flatten out, and make two large circles, one for each of them. And before too long, the circles became rings, great big wonderful rings, sparkling in the pure sunlight, the wonder of that solar system, and some said even the galaxy.The other planets were too awed by Yee and Lan's new beauty to feel even the slightest drop of jealousy. .
