The Quadroon Girl

The Slaver in the broad lagoon
  Lay moored with idle sail;
He waited for the rising moon
  And for the evening gale.
Under the shore his boat was tied,
  And all her listless crew
Watched the gray alligator slide
  Into the still bayou.
Odours of orange-flowers and spice
  Reached them from time to time, 香气阵阵至。
Like the airs that breathing from

Upon a world of crime.
The Planter, under his roof of thatch,
  Smoked thoughtfully and slow;
The Slaver’s thumb was on the latch,
  He seemed in haste to go.
He said, “My ship at anchor rides          口言礁湖上,
  In yonder broad lagoon;
I only wait the evening tides
  And the rising of the moon.”
Before them, with her face upraised,
  In timid attitude,
Like one half curious, half amazed,
  A Quadroon maiden stood.
Her eyes were large and full of light,
  Her arms and neck were bare;
No garment she wore save a kirtle bright,
  And her own long, raven hair.
And on her lips there played a smile
  As holy, meek, and faint,
As lights in some cathedral aisle
  The features of a saint.
“The soil is barren,——the farm is old;”   地老田已荒,
  The thoughtful Planter said;               场主暗自语。
Then looked upon the Slaver’s gold,
  And then upon the maid.

His heart within him was at strife
  With such accursed gains;
For he knew whose passions gave

her life,                              心知女谁生,
  Whose blood ran in her veins.
But the voice of nature was too weak;
  He took the glittering gold!
Then pale as death grew the maiden’s
  Her hands as icy cold.
The Slaver led her from the door,
  He led her by the hand,
To be his slave and paramour
  In a strange and distant land!

4
农场主在草堂中,边吸水烟边犹豫,奴隶贩子摸着门,好像随时要离去;
5

A PSALM OF LIFE

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,

     “人生不过是一场幻梦!”          "Life is but an empty dream!"

     昏睡的灵魂无异于死去,            For the soul is dead that slumbers,

     事物的真相和外表不同。            And things are not what they seem.

     人生是真切的!人生是实在的!      Life is real! Life is earnest!

     它的归宿决不是荒坟;              And the grave is not its goal;

     “你本是尘土,必归于尘土”,      "Dust thou art, to dust returnest,"

     这是指躯壳,不是指灵魂。          Was not spoken of the soul.

     我们命定的目标和道路              Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,

     不是享乐,也不是受苦;            Is our destined end or way;

     而是行动,在每个明天              But to act, that each to-morrow

     都超越今天,跨出新步。            Finds us further than to-day.

     智艺无穷,时光飞逝;              Art is long, and Time is fleeting,

     这颗心,纵然勇敢坚强,            And our hearts, though stout and brave,

     也只如鼙鼓,闷声敲打着,          Still, like muffled drums, are beating

     一下又一下,向坟地送丧。          Funeral marches to the grave.

     在这世界辽阔的战场上,            In the world's broad field of battle,

     在这人生巨大的营帐中;            In the bivouac of Life,

     莫学那听人驱策的哑畜,            Be not like dumb, driven cattle!

     要做一个战斗的英雄!              Be a hero in the strife!

     别指望未来,不管它多迷人!        Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!

     把已逝的过去永久埋葬!            Let the dead Past bury its dead!

     行动吧--趁着每一个今天!        Act,---act in the living Present!

     赤心在胸中,上帝在头上!          Heart within, and God o'erhead!

     伟人的生平昭示我们:              Lives of great men all remind us

     我们能够生活得高尚,              We can make our lives sublime,

     而当告别人世的时候,              And, departing, leave behind us

     留下脚印在时间的沙上;            Footprints on the sands of time;

     也许我们有一个兄弟                Footprints, that perhaps another,

     航行在庄严的人生大海,            Sailing o'er life's solemn main,

     遇险沉了船,绝望的时刻,          A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,

     会看到这脚印而振作起来。          Seeing, shall take heart again.

     那么,让我们起来行动吧,          Let us, then, be up and doing,

     对任何命运都敢于担戴;            With a heart for any fate;

     不断地进取,不断地追求,          Still achieving, still pursuing

     要学会劳作,学会等待。            Learn to labor and to wait..

      THE ARROW AND THE SONG
  I shot an arrow into the air,
  It fell to earth, I knew not where;
  For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
  Could not follow it in its flight.
  I breathed a song into the air,
  It fell to earth, I knew not where;
  For who has sight so keen and strong,
  That it can follow the flight of song?
  Long, long afterward, in an oak
  I found the arrow, still unbroke;
  And the song, from beginning to end,
  I found again in the heart of a friend

Lost Youth《

     Often I think of the beautiful town那美丽的小城常让我怀想

     That is seated by the sea;它就座落在大海边上;

     Often in thought go up and down多少次,我神游于故乡

     The pleasant streets of that dear old town,那些可爱的街衢,

     And my youth comes back to me.俨然又回到了年少的时光。

     And a verse of a Lapland song那首拉普兰歌曲的诗句,

     Is haunting my memory still:一直在我记忆里回荡:

     “A boy’s will is the wind’s will,“少年的愿望就是风的愿望,

     And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”青春的遐想是多么悠长悠长。”

     【注】在首节中,诗人告诉读者故土难忘,那里曾留下青春的足迹,浓浓的乡情时常萦绕心扉。最后两行叠句是诗人把John Scheffer的《拉普兰的历史》(The History of Laplan,1674)中的诗句改编过来:“A youth’s desire is the desire of the wind,/All his essaies/Are long delaies,/No issue can they find(青年的愿望就是风的愿望,他所有的愿望被长久拖延,总难实现)。”改编之后仍然沿用该隐喻或暗喻(metaphor),但是增加了首字母韵(alliteration)“w”,更富有乐感。

     I can see the shadowy lines of its trees,
     我望见排排葱茏的树木,
     And catch, in sudden gleams,
     还瞥见了远处环抱的海洋,
     The sheen of the far-surrounding seas,
     发出的闪闪波光,
     And islands that were the Hesperides
     那些岛屿,就像是极乐仙境,
     Of all my boyish dreams.
     增添我多少童年梦想!
     And the burden of that old song,
     那首古老歌曲的复调
     It murmurs and whispers still:
     依旧在耳边喃喃吟唱:
     “A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
     “少年的愿望就是风的愿望,
     And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
     青春的遐想是多么悠长悠长。”

     【注】本节书写了诗人少年时记忆中的故乡风景,表现诗人充满浪漫幻想。“极乐仙境”(the Hesperides)是希腊神话中,吃后能使人长生不老的金苹果生长的地方。第七行中“it murmurs and whispers still”是拟人修辞手法,“it”指上一行中的 “the burden of that old song”。

    I remember the black wharves and the slips,
     我记得乌黑的码头和船台,

And the sea-tides tossing free;
     海上恣意奔腾的波浪;
     And Spanish sailors with bearded lips,
     满嘴胡须的西班牙水手,
     And the beauty and mystery of the ships,
     一艘艘船舶的壮丽与神奇,
     And the magic of the sea.
     茫茫大海迷人的魔力。
     And the voice of that wayward song
     那萦回不去的执拗歌声
     Is singing and saying still:
     仍然在又讲又唱:
     “A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
     “少年的愿望就是风的愿望,
     And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
     青春的遐想是多么悠长悠长。”
     【注】该节反映了波特兰作为国际海港的一面,轮船与大海在少年诗人稚嫩的心灵里充满神奇与磁力。第六至七行中“the voice of that wayward song/ Is singing and saying still” 是拟人修辞手法。

I remember the bulwarks by the shore,
     我记得岸边的防御工事,

     And the fort upon the hill;
     记得山头耸立的碉楼;

     The sunrise gun, with its hollow roar,
     朝阳的大炮隆隆怒吼,

     The drum-beat repeated o'er and o'er,
     鼙鼓喧天响不休,

     And the bugle wild and shrill.
     号角激昂锐利地吹奏。

     And the music of that old song
     那首老歌的悠扬曲调

     Throbs in my memory still:
     依然跳动在我的心头:

     “A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
     “少年的愿望就是风的愿望,

     And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
     青春的遐想是多么悠长悠长。”
     【注】在历史上波特兰曾几经战火洗礼,在1812-1815年的英美战争中,1813年在该市附近海域,美国的“企业”号与英国的“拳击师”号战舰发生激战,双方舰长均阵亡,后并排葬于曼乔伊山公墓;该市至今仍存有战场部分遗迹。后一节里的海战就指本次战役。第六至七行中“the music of that old song / Throbs in my memory still”采用了拟人修辞手法。

I remember the sea-fight far away,
  How it thundered o’er the tide!
  炮声在滚滚海浪上震荡;
  And the dead captains, as they lay
  In their graves, o’erlooking the tranquil bay,
    Where they in battle died.
    And the sound of that mournful song
  Goes through me with a thrill:
    “A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
  And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
  I can see the breezy dome of groves,
  The shadows of Deering’s Woods;
  熟悉的婆娑树影;
  And the friendships old and the early loves
    Come back with a Sabbath sound,
    as of doves In quiet neighborhoods.
  And the verse of that sweet old song,
  It flutters and murmurs still:
  “A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
  And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
“Sabbath”? “And the friendships old and the early loves /Come back…as of doves/ In …” 第六至七行中“the verse of that sweet old song, / It flutters and murmurs still ”采用了拟人修辞手法。

    I remember the gleams and glooms that dart

      Across the school-boy’s brain;
  闪过我稚嫩的心灵;
  The song and the silence in the heart,
  That in part are prophecies, and in part
Are longings wild and vain.
  And the voice of that fitful song
  Sings on, and is never still:
   “A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
  And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
第六至七行中“the voice of that fitful song,/Sings on,…”

    There are things of which I may not speak;
  有一些情景我不能倾诉;
  There are dreams that cannot die;
  有一些梦想永不会泯灭;
  There are thoughts that make the strong heart weak,
  And bring a pallor into the cheek,
    And a mist before the eye.
  And the words of that fatal song
  Come over me like a chill:
   “A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
  And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
第七行中的“like a chill”是明喻,把“the words of that fatal song(那句不祥的歌词)”比作“(chill)寒颤”。

   Strange to me now are the forms I meet
    When I visit the dear old town;
  眼前的景象已这般陌生;
  But the native air is pure and sweet,
  And the trees that o’ershadow each well-known street,
    As they balance up and down,
  Are singing the beautiful song,
  Are sighing and whispering still:
A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
  And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
  【评注】第四至七行中“the trees…/Are singing…,/ Are sighing and whispering”是拟人修辞手法。

  And Deering’s Woods are fresh and fair,
  故乡的森林清新而秀丽;
  And with joy that is almost pain
  My heart goes back to wander there,
  我的心在那游历;
  And among the dreams of the days that were,
I find my lost youth again.
  And the strange and beautiful song,
  The groves are repeating it still:
  “A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
    And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
  【评注】第二行中 “…joy that is almost pain”采用了“矛盾修饰法(paradox)”,第六至七行中“the strange and beautiful song,/The groves are repeating it still ”采用了拟人修辞手法。
