The People Who Distributed Clothes
We are Limusishiden, a Mongghul (Chinese: Tu) nationality osteopathic surgeon in the Qinghai Medical College Attached Hospital, Xining City, Qinghai Province; Jugui, the wife of Limushishiden, who works with
Appropriate Technology of Asia; and Lozang who is a farmer from Wangjia Village, Huzhu Mongghul Autonomous County.
The Places
We three gave clothes to residents of these places in Huzhu County:

The Clothes
We gave clothes to:
· a total of 77 families
· a total of 328 people
· 184 girls and women
· 144 boys and men.
Specifically, we gave
· eleven pair of socks
· fifty-two woolen clothes
· sixteen children clothes
· twenty-one coats
· sixty-seven pairs of pants
· one hundred and fifty-three pieces of underwear
· sixty-one pairs of short pants
· sixteen pairs of shoes
· three hats
· one pair of gloves
· one rain coat
· thirty-seven skirts
· twenty-four toys
· two scarves
· two bags

Choosing Recipients
We chose recipients using the following guidelines:
· disabled or invalids in a family which causes the family to be poor because the disabled one is unable to
work in the fields and find seasonal employment outside the village.
· a young couple supporting two students to study in middle schools and universities which is a remarkable
financial strain.
· large households with limited arable land.
· the most impoverished villages and the poorest families in the villages.
· prior to distribution we studied potential recipients, e.g., how many people are in the family, their living
conditions, etc.
· prior to visiting a village first we asked people from the village or village heads about families that would
benefit the most from the project. Later, we then visited their homes.
· recipients were told who gave the clothes and why.
Examples of Beneficiaries
· Zhan Gunbu is 32 years old, has been married 12 years, and has two children. His ten year old son studies in the village primary school. His daughter is six this year. His wife took ill in March 2003 with ovarian
cancer. Despite an operation she passed away in August 2004. Mr. Zhan Gunbu now owes more than 10,00 rmb. His family has no resources other than several mu of cultivated land.
· Li Yatou is 32 years old, deaf, mute, and her father died in 1996. Her mother suffers from several ailments and is physically very weak. A man married her and moved into her home in 1992. They had a son. Three
years later, her husband deserted the family. In 1998, she married again. She is one of the poorest people in her village.
· Zhan Jiaxi is 47 years old. His wife died when she was 33 from illness. He has three sons and has not remarried. His fist son married and left the home. He currently lives with his two unmarried sons.
· Lin Zhanjing is 35 years old. He is mentally disabled. He lives with his wife and two children. They are impoverished.
· Suolashiziniurou is 52. He has a wife and three sons. His third son has a depilating illness that the family cannot afford to treat.
· Leiguier is a 59 year old un married blind woman. Blindness prevented her from ever marrying. Her 38 year old son's wife left their home because of the family's acute poverty. Leguier's 11 year old grandson does not
attend school.
· Li Yonghua is 61 years old. Her family members include her husband, son, daughter-in-law, and a grandson and a granddaughter. One reason this family is so poor is that they have little land that can be cultivated.
· Haniga is 39 years old. Her family members include her husband and two children. Her husband has been ill for the last several years and this means he cannot find seasons employment outside the area. Adding to 3 the family's poverty is the fact they have very little arable land. The older was unable to study in college and the second son just graduated from primary school.
· Na Yanling is 42 years old. His parents are over seventy years old in 2004. His wife died about ten years ago. His young son has been operated on for skin cancer. He later married a mentally disabled woman. Na Yanling, his two children, parents and younger brother and his wife live together. They have a hard life.

Dear Contributors,
We--Limusishiden, Jugui, Luozang--personally were involved in distributing your contributed clothes during the October First Holiday, 2004. First the clothes were loaded on a small vehicle from Dr. Kevin Stuart’s home in Xining City and transported to my hometown--Huzhu Mongghul Autonomous County, Qinghai Province. Jugui and I spent almost two days distributing the
clothes in ten villages by taxi. Mr. Luozang spent another two days doing similar distribution work.
We spent more than 200 rmb hiring vehicles to transport the clothes to the benefited families. We were glad to do so because the clothes were so useful, now that cold weather is coming.
All contributed clothes were high quality. For the recipients, every item was useful and necessary.
Local people do not wear skirts. However, this posed no problem because local women will use them to patch clothes and to resew into pants.
Many children received toys. We are sure this is the first time for them to have toys in the village.
The clothing the villagers received saved them funds that they can very usefully spend on medicines, food, and school expenses for children in their homes.
