Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!

《星条旗》是美国国歌，由美国律师弗朗西斯·斯科特·基作词，美国作曲家约翰·斯塔福德·史密斯作曲。1942年制定的法令规定，美国人对国旗宣誓时，应取立正姿势，右手郑重地放在左胸前，以示对国旗的崇敬
弗朗西斯·斯科特·基（Francis Scott Key，1779–1843年），是美国国歌《星条旗》的歌词作者。1814年9月13-14日的一个晚上，基作为律师拜访英国舰队，联系一位囚犯的释放事宜。英军命令基待在他自己的小船上，并加以看守。与此同时英军炮击了巴尔的摩的主要防守据点，麦克亨利堡。
在次日清晨，当看到美国国旗仍飘扬在要塞上空时，基获得了灵感，在一张旧信封的背面写下了一首诗歌，他将其命名为《保卫麦克亨利堡》。一周后，这首诗歌在美国巴尔的摩市刊登。这首诗以一首老歌《致天国里的阿纳克利翁》作为配曲，很快就广为人知。1931年，《星条旗》（The Star-Spangled Banner）被正式定为美国国歌。
