The Quadroon Girl         

                       混血女         

The Slaver in the broad lagoon       奴贩泊舟处,
  Lay moored with idle sail;        礁湖水浩荡。

人生礼赞 A PSALM OF LIFE

不要用忧伤的调子对我说:          Tell me not, in mournful numbers,

     “人生不过是一场幻梦!”          "Life is but an empty dream!"

     昏睡的灵魂无异于死去,            For the soul is dead that slumbers,

     事物的真相和外表不同。            And things are not what they seem.

     人生是真切的!人生是实在的!      Life is real! Life is earnest!

     它的归宿决不是荒坟;              And the grave is not its goal;

     “你本是尘土,必归于尘土”,      "Dust thou art, to dust returnest,"

     这是指躯壳,不是指灵魂。          Was not spoken of the soul.

     我们命定的目标和道路              Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,

     不是享乐,也不是受苦;            Is our destined end or way;

     而是行动,在每个明天              But to act, that each to-morrow

     都超越今天,跨出新步。            Finds us further than to-day.

     智艺无穷,时光飞逝;              Art is long, and Time is fleeting,

箭和歌

我向空中射出一只箭
  它落到地上
  不知在何方
  因为它飞得那么迅疾
  眼力跟不上它的飞翔

  我向空中唱出一支歌
  它落到地上
  不知在何方
  因为谁的眼力会那么尖那么强
  可以跟得上歌声的飞扬

  很久很久以后
  我在一棵橡树上找到了那支箭
  没有折断
  而那首歌
  从头到尾
  我也发现藏在一个朋友的心间

      THE ARROW AND THE SONG
  I shot an arrow into the air,
  It fell to earth, I knew not where;
  For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
  Could not follow it in its flight.
  I breathed a song into the air,
  It fell to earth, I knew not where;
  For who has sight so keen and strong,

  Long, long afterward, in an oak
  I found the arrow, still unbroke;

  I found again in the heart of a friend

逝去的青春

Lost Youth《我逝去的青春》
     
     Often I think of the beautiful town那美丽的小城常让我怀想
     
     That is seated by the sea;它就座落在大海边上;
     
     Often in thought go up and down多少次,我神游于故乡
     
     The pleasant streets of that dear old town,那些可爱的街衢,
     
     And my youth comes back to me.俨然又回到了年少的时光。
     
     And a verse of a Lapland song那首拉普兰歌曲的诗句,
     
     Is haunting my memory still:一直在我记忆里回荡:
     
     “A boy’s will is the wind’s will,“少年的愿望就是风的愿望,

     【注】在首节中,诗人告诉读者故土难忘,那里曾留下青春的足迹,浓浓的乡情时常萦绕心扉。最后两行叠句是诗人把John Scheffer的《拉普兰的历史》(The History of Laplan,1674)中的诗句改编过来:“A youth’s desire is the desire of the wind,/All his essaies/Are long delaies,/No issue can they find(青年的愿望就是风的愿望,他所有的愿望被长久拖延,总难实现)。”改编之后仍然沿用该隐喻或暗喻(metaphor),但是增加了首字母韵(alliteration)“w”,更富有乐感。

     I can see the shadowy lines of its trees,

  “少年的愿望就是风的愿望,青春的遐想是多么悠长悠长”在诗中被重复了十次,那风的愿望究竟是什么?在世界各地的风都应有这样的共性吧:任意性,来无影去无踪,无人能挡,无人能捕捉。青春——一个火辣辣的字眼;青春年少,激情有余,理性不足,常如脱缰的野马,与风的本性不也有惊人的相似吗?古今中外的青春不就是这样!.

朗费罗,H.w.(Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,1807-1882) 19世纪美国最伟大的浪漫主义诗人之一。1807年2月27日出生于缅因州波特兰城一个律师家庭。1822年进入博多因学院,与霍桑是同班同学。毕业后去过法国、西班牙、意大利和德国等地,研究这些国家的语言和文学。1836年开始在哈佛大学讲授语言,文学长达十八年,致力于介绍欧洲文化和浪漫主义作家的作品,成为新英格兰文化中心剑桥文学界和社交界的重要人物。
    1839年出版第一部诗集《夜吟》和浪漫主义小说《许珀里翁》,1841年出版《歌谣及其他》,从此确立了他的诗人地位。1842年出版组诗《奴役篇》,1845年发表诗集《布吕赫钟楼及其他》。1847年发表的长篇叙事诗《伊凡吉林》和《海华沙之歌》(1855)、《迈尔斯·斯坦狄什的求婚》(1858)是朗费罗的三部主要诗作,这些作品的发表使他声望日增。1863年发表《路畔旅舍的故事》,1872年出版诗剧《基督》三部曲,包括《神圣的悲剧》、《金色的传说》和《新英格兰悲剧》。 朗费罗晚年备受推崇,先后获得牛津大学和剑桥大学的荣誉博士学位。1882年逝世后,伦敦威斯敏斯特教堂诗人之角安放了他的胸像。他一生创作的大量抒情诗、叙事诗、歌谣和诗剧曾在美国和欧洲广泛流传,受到赞赏,但到20世纪之后却诗名骤降。.
